Dentures are a tried-and-true form of tooth replacement that has assisted countless generations of patients throughout the years. However, there’s often a short learning curve and adjustment period associated with this form of tooth replacement, and at times, it’s possible for them to cause sores inside the mouth. Continue reading to learn more about denture sores, why they can sometimes occur, and some tips on how you can find relief from the discomfort they cause.

What Causes Denture Sores?

Generally speaking, denture sores should be a rare occurrence if you wear dentures; however, they are the most common during the first few weeks of wearing new dentures as you adjust to them. Most of the time, any pain or discomfort related to dentures is due to them being new, so a little irritation is normal. However, poor-fitting dentures can cause irritation that leads to painful sores. They can also be a sign that your jawbone has changed shape over the years, and your denture now needs to be relined.

Tips for Finding Relief from Denture Sores

If you have denture sores that are large and painful, that you suspect may be infected, or haven’t healed after two weeks, you should contact your dentist. Otherwise, these sores can often be countered with certain at-home solutions. Here are a few tips and at-home remedies that should help you find relief from sores caused by wearing your dentures:

  • Give Your Mouth a Break – Make sure you take your dentures out every night before going to bed to give your mouth a chance to rest – and your sores a chance to heal. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever while doing this.
  • Rinse with Salt Water – Warm saltwater rinses are commonly recommended for different types of oral health issues, including denture sores. Add ¼ cup of warm water and ¼ teaspoon of salt, stirring until the salt is dissolved. Gently swish this mixture for 30 seconds; you can do this a few times a day to help heal your sores.
  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene – This is critical for preventing infection; while it might not prevent sores from forming, it ensures they don’t get worse. Be sure you’re brushing any remaining natural teeth you have and soaking your dentures in an appropriate cleaning solution.

If denture sores are an ongoing problem despite trying these remedies, you should call your dentist to schedule an appointment; it might be a sign that your dentures are in need of a reline, which allows your dentist to refit them for more security and less irritation. Either way, denture sores aren’t something you have to needlessly ensure; your restoration is meant to feel comfortable and serve you well!
